The Mission, Enterprise Initiatives and Legislative Affairs Department (MELA) in the Legal Division of Freddie Mac is seeking an experienced attorney to join its fair lending and consumer protection team in addressing complex issues related to fair lending, fair housing, unfair and deceptive practices, consumer protection, multifamily housing, securitization, and applicable laws and regulations.
MELA is committed to providing quality, timely and cost-effective legal advice responsive to client needs on a variety of and corporate matters affecting Freddie Mac. This includes partnering with clients, establishing a consistent view of legal exposure across business lines, providing repeatable, measurable, and defensible processes, and improving the delivery and management of legal services. The successful candidate will be a highly organized self-starter with strong communication skills, able to balance responsibility for multiple projects on a wide range of matters simultaneously.
MELA is responsible for providing legal advice to internal clients on a wide range of issues related to Freddie Mac as a business entity, legislative, regulatory, compliance and risk management matters affecting the legal and business environment in which Freddie Mac and other financial institutions operate. We also assist our clients in navigating complex requirements applicable to government-sponsored enterprises. Other responsibilities include providing legal strategic advice to business units on submissions to and appearances before government officials and agencies.
Support clients throughout the Enterprise regarding all aspects of consumer protection and fair lending laws related to single and multifamily housing.
Work with Legal, Compliance, Fair Lending Analytics, Regulatory Affairs and a variety of incredibly versatile business people on fair lending and consumer law issues, including AI, models and unfair and deceptive practices.
Work with the team to identify and address complex and unique fair lending and consumer protection issues and conduct fair lending and consumer protection reviews of business lines and products.
Generally, 10 or more years of relevant sophisticated legal experience, either with a Government Sponsored Enterprise, a financial institution, a regulator, a law firm, or substantially similar experience
Juris Doctor (JD) degree; membership in good standing in a state Bar
Excellent analytical, strategic, legal research, writing and advocacy skills
Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to explain complex technical and legal concepts
Subject matter expertise in consumer protection, fair housing and fair lending laws
Demonstrated ability to advise on matters related to civil rights law and financial services, including familiarity with the FHA, FTC Act (UDAP), HMDA, ECOA, other consumer protection statutes and state anti-predatory lending laws
Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize novel legal claims, assess how they would apply across a large institution, and make concrete recommendations for how to mitigate legal risk
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle numerous issues across multiple substantive areas; set priorities independently; and delegate to more junior staff
Demonstrated capacity to lead projects with little to no supervision
Demonstrated ability to synthesize and analyze information in a fluid and fast-paced environment with kindness and precision
Demonstrated ability to fix things and find solutions

This position has an annualized market-based salary range of $224,000 - $336,000 and is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
